Backup Packages

In addition to the basic Unix backup utilities there are a number of commercially available backups packages and additional freely available Unix backup utilities.

Three of these products; ArcServe, OnmiBack, and Networker are used on the IU campus.

ArcServe
ArcServe allows a Unix server to be used to remotely perform backups on other machines. These client machines do not have to be running Unix. All operations can be performed using the GUI that comes with the package. ArcServe is available for HP-UX, Solaris, Solaris x86, SunOS, AIX, and create backups on different system.

OmniBack
OmniBack is an HP package. The current version is OmniBack II. The software is made to run on an HP workstation, but can be used to create backups on different system. For more optional information see HP OpenView OmniBack II Offers High Performance and HP OpenView OmniBack II

Networker
Networker is available for Solaris, HP-UX and AIX. It supports a variety of tape drives, autoloaders and optical jukeboxes. For more optional information see Networker for Unix

The Unix Guru Universe includes a list of public domain backup utilities. There are also a number of public domain backup utilities for Linux.
