I get questions like that every week, from people making LILO floppies. The most common problem is that they are trying to install

/usr/src/linux/vmlinux

on their floppy.

That's the wrong file! It's too big!

The file you probably wanted was

/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/zImage
