Using XThis section provides a basis for users of the X window graphical user interface, concentrating on UNIX based hardware. The information given here is essentially a beginners introduction. For more detailed information it is necessary to consult the appropriate documentation supplied with the particular hardware and X system in question. As already mentioned, X is based on a client-server model. So, firstly, it is necessary to run a server process on the computer at which the user is based. Then, clients can be run, either on the same computer, or on another to which there is a suitable network connection. How all this is actually achieved depends on the particular computer system and its configuration regarding X. If in doubt, consult the system administrator. The examples in this section apply to a UNIX workstation equiped with version 11 of the X window software distributed by the X Consortium. Some familiarity with the UNIX system is assumed.
